K43 - Dobrča

As a warmup you'll ride from Tržič along the Gorenjska Balcony, then ascend from the Radovljica side to Dobrča Mountain Hostel. The keenest adventurers can climb to the summit on foot, half an hour away, before descending back to the valley. The result? An admirable 1250 m of elevation change.

route

Tržič - Brezje pri Tržiču - towards Zadnja Vas - Dobrča Mountain Hostel - Lešanska pasture - Bistrica pasture - Brezje pri Tržiču - Tržič

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The starting point for cycling tours is in the city centre, opposite the Tržič bus station. Parking is possible in public parking areas (parking lots at the Municipality of Tržič, on Predilniška Road at the entrance to the city-BPT, at the Tržič Olympians Hall, along the street Za Mošenikom, among others).

In Tržič, head south and turn right after 200 m towards the health centre, then after 250 m (in front of the health centre) turn left up the hill, onto what is called Kovtrn'c. The road runs under the highway to Ljubelj. When it ends, turn right through a small tunnel and continue through Bistrica pri Tržiču. At the intersection with the main road and a wayside shrine, turn uphill to the right, towards Begunje. You will ascend to Brezje pri Tržiču.

Where the ascent ends, with beautiful views from what is called the Gorenjska balcony, continue through Hudi Graben and past the turnoff for Leše. About 200 m after a sharp curve to the right, where there is a wayside shrine, the forest road for Dobrča branches off to the right. Ahead of you is a more than 8-kilometre-long ascent with an elevation gain of about 800 metres. The road is not quite as well maintained in the upper part but still fully passable.

When you get to the hut, have a look around. The view is truly outstanding in almost every direction. The view to the north takes in the slope of Dobrča. In the east you can see Kriška Gora, Storžič and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, in the southeast the Sava Hills, the Ljubljana Basin and the mountains of the Notranjska region, including Snežnik. You can also see the Polhov Gradec and Škofja Loka Hills, Jelovica and Pokljuka, and the Julian Alps with Triglav. The hut, which was voted “Best Mountain Hut” a few years ago, is famed for its friendly service and good cooking.

Start the descent along the trail that goes towards Lešanska mountain pasture. It will soon turn into a singletrack trail. Descend past Lešanska mountain pasture towards Bistriška mountain pasture, where you can choose a more demanding descent to Ravne (variant K43a), while the main route takes you down along a forest road to Brezje pri Tržiču, where you turn left to go back to Tržič along the main road.
